BM No.1 🥱
Welcome to the first newsletter of the Boredom Society. We’re glad to have you on bored.🥁
👉 Unofficially, this one’s brought to you by “these uncertain times” & the Cleveland Browns logo. Officially, it’s brought to you by the Boredom Society (BS).
Over the next twelve months, we’re looking forward to sending along a mix of boring links and BS updates to keep you company as you welcome boredom wherever it may be found.
For our inaugural issue, we’re introducing a trio of guides who’ve nurtured the fertile soil of our own inactivity over the years…
1. John Cage’s 4’33” 👂
Originally composed in 1952, the piece has a knack for mimicking the sound and feel of it’s environment—becoming fresher and more contextual with each performance. Below, you’ll find one of our favourite recorded performances.
-
2. Gavin Pretor-Pinney’s “The Cloudspotter’s Guide” ☁️
This book introduced us to the Cloud Appreciation Society (which you can read/listen to a thorough history of here) back in 2007. We’ve had our head in the clouds ever since.
-
3. Anything by Andy Warhol 🥫
Andy Warhol’s pop art never failed to elevate the mundane and the monotonous to a levels hard to ignore. Whether it was his soup cans or his 1961 film Sleep, his use of repetition always leads us through boredom and into wonder. He also famously stated: “I like boring things”—which we’ll probably put on a shirt someday.
