Hits & Misc. #01: Philadelphia Chicken Man 🍗

Welcome to the re-boot, friends—I’m excited to get the newsletter up and running again! 👏

This time around, I’ll be adding some of my own work to the mix, but the format will otherwise look similar to that of 2020’s newsletters: themed lists of things I like(d), mostly from a while ago, and as different from issue to issue as possible! 🙃

I still believe the web’s too fast for anybody to enjoy without pause, so I can’t wait to dig through my old ⭐️’s, 👍’s and ♥️’s and spend some more time with the good stuff and you.

So without further ado: here’s issue 01: Philadelphia Chicken Man.

If you haven’t heard what went down in Philadelphia last week, let me tell you as succinctly as possible:

Alexander Tominsky — a.k.a. Philadelphia Chicken Man—ate 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days…the last of which was ingested on “that abandoned pier near Walmart” in the presence of a cheering crowd.

It was a legendary feat, and the more I reflect on the sheer lunacy of it, the more I’m convinced the world needs more spectacle of this sort.

👉 You can read more about the event—and hear from the Philly Chicken Man himself—here.

Below, you’ll find some of my favourite images of the main event and the days leading up to it.

First, let’s start with the poster.
Set in a gloriously off-centred Bebas Neue, the type’s hierarchy makes it easy to read without stealing any attention from those candid action-shots 😉. There’s white-space for days, and the copy answers 4 of the 5 W’s with extreme clarity:

  • Who? Me.

  • What? Eat my 40th rotiserie [sic] chicken in a row.

  • Where? That abandoned pier near Walmart.

  • When? 12 o’clock noon.

And the missing “Why?” Well, that just adds to the mystery here.

Now, let’s watch the event unfold in three acts.

Misc. 👀

Turns out the Chicken Man is one tough act to follow—especially when I don’t have any poultry-adjacent content of my own to share.

The closest I’ve got is this sticker I’ve been working on for a stand-up set my buddy Kevin Makins will be debuting later this month that’s all about “embarrassment, sincerity, and how we can save the world.

I’ve worked with Kevin in the past (on these stickers and this cassette tape j-card) and always enjoyed the process; he’s one of those guys who likes to give you the briefest of creative briefs in hopes you’ll pick up on something he wouldn’t have seen otherwise. 👀

For this project, all I got from Kevin was the title. It sounded as scary as it did earnest, so I decided to borrow heavily from b-movie horror film schtick and focus on a typeface that was oozing with sincerity. If Kevin was going to leave it all on the stage, this design had to be just as willing to embarrass itself. 😜

Thankfully, Kevin was a fan of the look and feel! Stickers are now in production and
and I’ve got my tickets to go watch Kevin kill it next week! 😵
