Hits & Misc. #14: Talk to me (about talking to you) 🗣️
1. Talk to me (about talking to you) 🗣️
For the first newsletter of the year, let’s reverse roles, shall we?!
I’m looking to YOU for some tips and pointers as I put together a few talks for this winter/spring about my London-based work…
👉 If you’ve got a favourite video (or podcast episode) of somebody talking about their art/work/creative practice, would you send it along to hello@jameskingsley.ca? I’d love the inspiration! 🙏
2. Let’s talk (with Kevin) about Church ⛪️
As mentioned in Issue 13, I had the pleasure of working on title cards for a 12-part series of monologues (recorded live over the course of one night) by my friend and “regular Pastor,” Kevin Makins.
Since the subject of his performance centered on our complicated histories with—and future of—the Church, I mixed it up big-time with the typography, letting it bleed off the edges and hitting as hard as the accompanying soundtrack (c/o Gareth Inkster). 🔨🔨
I’ve pasted a few of my favourite screencaps below, but at less than 5 mins per episode, you should give ‘em all a watch over your next few lunch breaks for the full effect! 👀
3. Let’s talk about those year end lists I didn’t write 📋
Heading into the holidays was busier than usual, so I took some proper time off the computer between Christmas and the New Year…meaning I never really got around to putting together my regular recap of the music I most enjoyed, the books and articles that interested me, the art that moved me etc. It felt weird. Still does.
The practice of looking back is a welcome reminder that as shiny as the future is, there’s some real diamonds taking shape under the pressure of time gone by. 💎 I’ve a hunch I’ll circle back before too long…
Misc. 🔗
🍻 One list I did get to was my annual salute to Ryan Gosling and London’s beer scene for The Localist. 🪿
🍕There’s a new pizza-joint opening in my neck of the woods and I can’t wait to try a slice!! 🤤
🐦⬛ I haven’t had a chance to sit down with the entirety of the SUPER DELUXE reissue of The Black Crowes’ 1992 masterpiece The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, but damn if that original doesn’t stand up after all these years! If you missed it the first time around, do yourself a favour and turn it up. ⬆️
